Hangeul Day: Why Korea Celebrates Its Alphabet — and 5 K-pop Songs to Prove It's Beautiful

How many countries have a national holiday just for their alphabet? Korea does — and it's one of the most beloved days on the calendar. 🇰🇷

한글날 (Hangeul Day), every October 9, celebrates 한글 (Hangeul), the Korean alphabet. And unlike almost every other writing system on Earth, Hangeul wasn't something that slowly evolved over centuries — it was invented, on purpose, by one person, for a beautiful reason. Let's get into it. ✍️

👑 The King Who Invented an Alphabet: Sejong the Great

Back in the 1400s, Korea wrote using Chinese characters (한자) — thousands of complex symbols that took years to master. That meant reading and writing belonged only to the wealthy, educated elite. Ordinary people were effectively locked out of literacy.

King Sejong the Great (세종대왕) decided to fix that. Out of love for his people, he led the creation of a brand-new alphabet designed to be so simple that anyone could learn it. In 1446, it was proclaimed under the name 훈민정음 (Hunminjeongeum) — literally "the correct sounds for instructing the people."

What makes Hangeul genius: its letters are shaped to mirror the mouth when you make each sound, and it's so logical that it's often called one of the most scientific writing systems ever designed. Linguists worldwide praise it, and the original Hunminjeongeum manuscript is a UNESCO Memory of the World document. A beginner can learn to read Hangeul in a single afternoon — ask anyone who's tried. 📖

🔤 It all starts with 가나다라. Just like English kids learn their "ABCs," Korean learners start with 가나다라 (ga-na-da-ra) — the first four syllables of the alphabet, built from the consonants ㄱ (g), ㄴ (n), ㄷ (d), ㄹ (r) plus the vowel ㅏ (a). "가나다" is basically Korean for "the ABCs." Learn how the consonants and vowels snap together into blocks, and you can read any Korean word — including every lyric below. 🧩

🗿 Say Hi to Sejong in Gwanghwamun

Want to meet the man himself? Head to Gwanghwamun Square (광화문광장) in central Seoul, where a giant golden statue of King Sejong sits on his throne, right in the heart of the city with Gyeongbokgung Palace behind him. 👑

It's one of Seoul's most iconic photo spots, and underneath the statue there's even a small exhibition hall about Hangeul and his reign. On Hangeul Day, people come to lay flowers and celebrate the king who gave Korea its voice.

💜 5 All-Korean K-pop Songs With the Most Beautiful Lyrics

Here's the fun part. Most K-pop mixes in plenty of English — but some songs are written almost entirely in pure, beautiful Korean, and they're perfect for Hangeul Day. We've picked five, each with a lovely lyric and one beautiful Korean word to take with you. 🎧

1. BTS — 소우주 (Mikrokosmos)

A glowing anthem about how every single person is their own little universe. Looking at a city skyline at night, BTS sees not buildings but people — each one a star.

한 사람에 하나의 역사 / 한 사람에 하나의 별 "One person, one history / one person, one star."

💫 Beautiful word: 별 (byeol) — "star." Simple, warm, and everywhere in Korean lyrics.

2. IU — 마음 (Heart)

IU wrote this gentle song herself, and it reads like a quiet confession — a small light that stays lit no matter what.

다만 꺼지지 않는 작은 불빛이 / 여기 반짝 살아있어요 "But a small light that never goes out / is right here, glimmering, alive."

💗 Beautiful word: 마음 (ma-eum) — "heart / mind." One of the most essential — and tender — words in all of Korean.

3. EXO — 발자국 (Lights Out / Footprints)

A song about youth and moving forward even when the path is dark — don't hesitate, just rise and keep walking.

주저하지 말고 나아가 / 주저하지 않고 일어서 "Don't hesitate, move forward / without hesitating, rise up."

👣 Beautiful word: 발자국 (bal-ja-guk) — "footprint." The marks you leave as you walk your own path.

4. Girls' Generation — 다시 만난 세계 (Into the New World)

The 2007 debut song that became a generation-defining anthem of courage. It sounds like a love song but it's really about facing an unknown future without fear.

수많은 알 수 없는 길 속에 / 희미한 빛을 난 쫓아가 "Through countless unknown roads / I chase after a faint light."

🌅 Beautiful word: 세계 (se-gye) — "world." As in 다시 만난 세계 — "the world we meet again."

5. NCT 127 — 윤슬 (Gold Dust)

Saved the prettiest for last. This song is named after one single, gorgeous Korean word — a love song comparing someone's light to shimmering water at night.

아마 너는 모르지 / 얼마나 네 빛이 예쁜지 "You probably don't know / how beautiful your light is."

✨ Beautiful word: 윤슬 (yun-seul) — the shimmer of sunlight or moonlight scattered across rippling water. It has no single-word English equivalent, and even Koreans consider it one of the prettiest words in the language. The National Institute of Korean Language classifies it as a native Korean word.

💡 Fun fact: 윤슬 is so lovely that it genuinely surprises people. In one viral clip, Minami of the rookie group RESCENE — a Japanese member — used the word "윤슬," and Korean fans were charmed that she knew such a poetic, deep-cut Korean word. When a word makes native speakers swoon, you know it's special. 🌊
